Blockbid recently met Damien Ducourty, founder of B9lab, to ask him about the quality of blockchain education that really mattered.

What is your vision when you start B9lab?
DD: Bitcoin tickled our founders' interest in around 2009. When it became clear that smart contract platforms were really worth (around the end of 2014), we decided to go live.

One thing becomes clear: blockchain communities are desperately needed high-quality, consolidated training materials so that interested developers can improve their skills in weeks, not months or years.
Therefore, B9lab: an online academy where developers and non-programmers can find the best education, training, and talent in their classroom, in blockchain and decentralized applications.

What distinguishes B9lab from other blockchain education providers?
DD: At the time of its establishment, B9lab was one of the first organizations to come out with a consolidated online training program. Today we remain the only online blockchain academy in the marketplace that combines an in-depth training, lead instructor and industry-leading blockchain certification program. The experience of active learning is really what makes the difference, with expert instructors really helping students review and improve their code through many direct projects.

You can say our mission in B9lab is to educate as many people as possible. How does B9lab certification work?
DD: Our special certification dapps put a record of each certification directly to the Ethereum blockchain along with the recipient's public key. Blockchain is public and available to anyone to verify, so no one can censor or delete this information or deny the fact that certification is happening at this time.

Why did B9lab decide to certify students in the first place?

DD: Our original intent with certification is that we may hire first-rate developers on their own at any time (to meet our own needs or for clients looking for quality blockchain talent). We find a real need to ensure that B9lab alumni are truly the best in its class. We can not and will not compromise on quality as it will affect the quality of our alumni-generated code and overall project profitability. BB: What is the graduation rate / certification for the Ethereum Certified Training Course?
DD: The final exam of each course of the B9lab developer is quite demanding, and requires an 80% or higher score to qualify for certification. Also keep in mind that the certification process is optional - some students opt out because they are not ready to pass the exam, or because they've been offered a job just to be a B9lab student. Some never plan on becoming a blockchain developer in the first place, and just want enough knowledge to be able to advise as a consultant. However, although the number of students fluctuates from group to group, the current graduation rate for the entire course is about 15%.
